In den 40 Jahren nach dem Erscheinungsjahr 1981 des ersten Bandes bis heute hat die Pilzwissenschaft einen ungeahnten Fortschritt gemacht. Die neuen Methoden der molekularen Genanalyse und der weltweite Wissensaustausch über das Internet führten zu einer neuen Sicht des natürlichen Systems der Pilze und machten tiefgreifende taxonomische und nomenklatorische Änderungen notwendig. Viele Pilzarten sind inzwischen anderen und vor allem neu geschaffenen Gattungen zugeordnet worden, andere sind inzwischen dank neuen Erkenntnissen als Fehlbestimmungen eingestuft worden, und einige Arten können mit den Angaben in den Büchern nur bestimmt werden, wenn diese durch weitere Präzisierungen ergänzt werden.
Aus diesem Grund hat die Wissenschaftliche Kommission der Mykologischen Gesellschaft Luzern eine sogenannte Referenzdatei erstellt, in der die Korrekturen für die in der Reihe „Pilze der Schweiz“ beschriebenen Pilze aufgeführt sind. Die Autoren verweisen darauf, dass auch diese Listen nur das momentane Wissen darstellen und von den persönlichen Auffassungen anerkannter Mykologen geprägt sind, was heisst, dass auch hier immer wieder Änderungen auftreten werden.
